Our Medicine MBBS (5 year) and Medicine MBBS (4 year graduate entry) programmes are supported by both Student Finance England (SFE) and NHS Student Bursaries. This means that medical students may not have to pay tuition fees for some year(s) of study at St George’s. The funding available depends on the course studied and all students are advised to check their eligibility with NHS Student Bursaries.

Support for non-NHS funded years of study (MBBS)
Medicine MBBS 5-year students can apply to Student Finance England (SFE) for a full tuition fee loan for each non-NHS funded year of study (years 1 to 4). Please note that previous study at Higher Education level may affect entitlement. Graduates on the MBBS5 programme will not be eligible for the SFE tuition fee loan and will need to self-fund the tuition fees for the first four years of the course.
Medicine MBBS 4-year graduate entry students are required to self-fund the first £3,465 of the first year’s tuition fee. A tuition fee loan of £5,785 is available from Student Finance England for the remainder. These amounts may be subject to change so please also check the relevant organisation's website for up to date details.
All eligible MBBS students in a non-NHS funded year of study can apply to Student Finance England for an income assessed maintenance loan. Grants for dependants and Disabled Students’ Allowance are also available to eligible students.
Medicine MBBS 5-year students in non-NHS funded years of study may also be considered for our university bursary, the St George’s Opportunity Fund Grant. This bursary is available to SFE-funded students who are undertaking their first degree. Other previous study may also affect entitlement.
Please visit our student loans and grants and bursaries pages for more information.
NHS Bursary Reforms - funding arrangements for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional courses from academic year 2017/18
From 1 August 2017 the student loans system replaced NHS Student Bursaries for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional courses. This affected the following courses at St George's:
Usually students with an equivalent level qualification are not eligible for student finance for a subsequent degree course, however an exception to this rule applies to the above programmes. Students undertaking these courses as a second undergraduate degree can apply for the standard student finance package, just like students studying for a first degree.
Additional information
Under the student finance system students can apply for loans to support their tuition fee and living costs. The income assessed maintenance loan is calculated using the course term dates, so offers additional support to students on courses that have a longer than average academic year.
Students can also apply for income assessed grants for dependants, for example Childcare Grant, Adult Dependants Grant and Parents’ Learning Allowance, if applicable. Non-income assessed Disabled Students’ Allowance is also available.
