Professor Jon Friedland, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at St George’s, University of London, has been appointed President-elect and Secretary General of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).
The appointment was announced at the ESCMID Global Conference in Barcelona, and follows Professor Friedland’s tenure as the Society’s Scientific Affairs Officer over the last four years.
ESCMID is the leading Society for clinical microbiology and infectious diseases in Europe, which supports microbiologists and infectious disease specialists along their career paths whilst promoting innovative research and education to advance the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases worldwide.
As President-elect and Secretary General, Professor Friedland will work with the President to provide critical strategic direction to help the Society deliver its objectives. Within the wide remit of the position, he will have strategic oversight of ESCMID’s Affiliated Societies and prestigious funding awards, liaise with policy and infection groups at a global scale, and support the development of the communications strategy.
