In line with HMRC guidance, your purchase of a computer can be zero-rated provided it is to be used PURELY for:
medical research
training
diagnosis
treatment.
If a computer is purchased as a ‘mixed use’ computer, for example, connected to lab equipment but also used for general purpose/web browsing/email, it cannot be zero VAT rated.
Where the computer is being purchased for ‘training’ purposes, it must be in the context of being used to deliver teaching direct to the student.
Computers purchased for use by individual members of teaching staff do not fall under the ‘training’ purpose and are not eligible for VAT relief on this basis.
Zero rating does not apply to computing equipment to be used for the administration or support of the eligible activities listed above.
