Every member of St George’s, University of London, staff or student, is given access to a central storage area in order to store files and documents for work or study. It is also possible to set up shared storage areas (for example, a departmental network drive) so that files and documents can be accessed by specific groups of people. These central storage areas can then be accessed any time you log onto St George’s network on any machine on-site. It is also possible to access them from off-site.
Managing your files: best practice
View all Close all
The contents of your H: drive (or any other shared drive) are backed up every night so it is preferable to save your work to your H: drive rather than using the C: drive (hard drive) on your PC or laptop.
Files stored in your H: drive are secure and can only be accessed by you upon logging onto the network with your St George’s username and password. However, it is also possible to add additional security to sensitive or confidential information by password-protecting files. How you do this will depend on the specific application you are using (eg Word). If you would like help or advice with password protection, please contact the helpdesk on x5435.
You should not use email as a mechanism for transferring files, especially for large files. You can use one of the options outlined above, such as uploading them to a shared drive, or you can use St George’s file upload service.
For more information, see sending attachments or large files or contact the helpdesk on x5435.
