In 2021, we initiated the Black and Beyond: Celebrating Black Excellence campaign. This campaign, a collaborative effort between students and staff, was inspired by Khadija Owusu and Lucrece Wasolua-Kibeti, who were final year medical students at the time. They were eager to witness increased recognition and celebration of our Black staff and students at St George's, University of London acknowledging the importance of having role models with Black backgrounds. The campaign's development received support from various members of our staff and student community.
Black and Beyond: Celebrating Black Excellence aims to spotlight the accomplishments and contributions of our Black staff and students. It features profiles of individuals from within the St George's community. By celebrating excellence, the campaign seeks to acknowledge the diverse contributions these individuals have made, whether in academia or other areas, and how their achievements can inspire us all.
The campaign has extended beyond its initial launch, and we add to our growing list of Black role models each year. We invite you to explore the outstanding contributions made thus far and encourage you to nominate someone you believe should be featured in our campaign.
"I am passionate about the mental liberation of people through the attainment of knowledge."
"I knew that my determination and dedication would inspire many people."
"I have learnt that everything happens for a reason. You will endure some hardships, but they do not define you."
"I did not take the expected, or at the time preferred, path to get to where I am now, but I would not change my journey or experiences at all."
"I think the thing that motivates me most is my quest for knowledge and having the opportunity to help someone realise their dream."
"Hopefully, my decision to follow my passion and to go against the status quo will encourage other young black students to do the same."
"University is going to be challenging, more challenging than you think, but nothing good ever came easy."
"My motivation comes from there being so much work in the world that needs to be done. We all have a unique potential to make change."
"I am keen to chart my path to show young black women that this is a career where they will succeed."
"Although most people do see past skin colour, it is still work in progress".
"You have to be hungry for something, you have to aspire to something! It’s true for any person of any colour."
"I do think that I have grown from everything that has happened to me, not only over these last four years, but throughout my life so far. There’s always a lesson to be learnt."
"I can see it from my parents and many other successful black people, that despite the oppression we have faced for centuries, we will continue to rise above it and excel in our fields."
"I have not had the easiest of journeys but I believe that my journey and life experiences have not just been for my growth; they are also testimony that you can achieve what you want if you put your mind to it."
"I am a father of two and, as a parent, you want things to be better for your children than it was for you - for the next generation not to doubt themselves."
We are asking staff and students to nominate colleagues who inspire them as part of our campaign to celebrate our Black staff and students. We want to share their different experiences and the contributions they have made to St George’s.
To do this, please complete the form below. We'll then publish a number of articles on the University website telling the stories of participants of the campaign. These may also be shared across other communications channels such as social media or staff/student newsletters.
