City St George's, University of London will not comment on domestic or international matters, or adopt a position, outside the scope of its formally established mission. This applies to both internal and external communication, and to any issue with a political or otherwise contested dimension. As a matter of principle and practice we will only comment where such an issue directly pertains to the delivery of our charitable objects.
Where an event impacts our staff, students, and as appropriate alumni, we will point to support or assistance, and indicate our care for them (and their families). We have established routes for communication on business continuity, staff and student welfare. The relevant protocols are subject to regular review.
It is important to understand that our decision not to comment does not reflect any individual positions on these issues, nor necessarily any lack of awareness of the issues and their import. As a university, we are a UK charitable institution regulated by the Office for Students (OfS) and as such we support democracy and the rule of law (thus we condemn violence and actions outside the law).
Setting aside the legal constraints on what we can properly do, it has become clear that choosing where we express our ‘concern’ (or similar sentiments), and where we do not, has become itself a matter of political contest. We cannot engage in it. It is recognised that adhering to this policy is challenging, morally and practically, and will entail collective restraint.
This institutional position does not impinge on, or impede, the exercise of freedom of speech or academic freedom by individuals (or groups of individuals) within the institution.
