St George's and City have merged. Find out more.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare and Biomedical Education (PgCert HBE) is designed for St George’s educators who are interested in working towards a teaching qualification in higher education practice. It is tailored specifically to teaching and learning in science and healthcare disciplines.

This part-time, 12-month course is designed primarily for new or early-career educators and Clinical Teaching Fellows who are teaching St George’s students. It aims to help develop your teaching and assessment practice and support you to become a confident, scholarly, reflective professional, prepared for the opportunities and challenges you will encounter in higher education.

The course is accredited by Advance HE for recognition as Fellow in relation to the Professional Standards Framework (2023) (subject to approval in August 2023).

What do PgCert HBE students say about the course?

“I have really enjoyed the opportunity to reflect critically on my own teaching and on the evidence underpinning practice” (PTES 2022)

“the topics discussed were interesting and relevant directly to the teaching that I do and therefore I could implement changes/ideas that I have learnt from the module into my daily practice” (SOLT Feedback Module 1, 2022-23)

“a welcome break from the clinical environment. [PgCert HBE] Tutors are exceptionally understanding which makes the most wonderful change and makes the module as a whole more enjoyable” (SOLT Feedback Module 1, 2022-23)

How much will the course cost?

From 2022, we changed our entry criteria and no longer operate a full and reduced fee option for the PgCert HBE. Before making an application please review the fees and funding page of the course admissions page for an up-to-date statement of the fees for your year of entry as well as information on whether you are eligible for employer sponsorship and any additional costs.

Other professional development options

  • Developing Teaching is a 6-week short course to introduce you to teaching and the support of learning.
  • SHINE is a recognition scheme that enables you to work towards fellowship recognition at Associate Fellow, Fellow or Senior Fellow category. The scheme is self-directed and designed to help you to evidence your existing experience and reflect on practice as well as plan your future professional development
