Who we are
The Graduate School provides an institutional focus for our postgraduate students at St. George’s.
The Graduate School aims to:
- ensure and enhance the quality of postgraduate training, supervision and education
- provide a supportive environment to enable students to make timely progress towards academic success and the development of their career
- provide guidance on the regulatory and policy framework for postgraduate students
- initiate the development of innovative programme content to meet the needs of employers and effective leaders in medical and healthcare settings
- provide professional development opportunities to ensure the effectiveness of the University’s early career teachers and researchers
- oversee the provision of high-quality postgraduate teaching and supervision and an appropriate research environment for students conducting doctoral research.
The school is located within the Education Strategy and Development Office (ESDO) which is lead by the Deputy Principal (Education). However, the Graduate school has a university-wide remit and articulates closely with the Institute for Infection and Immunity (I&I), the Institute for Molecular and Clinical Sciences (MCS), the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI), the Institute of Medical and Biomedical Education (IMBE) and the Faculty for Health, Social Care and Education (FHSCE).
Dr Carwyn Rhys Hooper is the Head of the Graduate School. He is supported by the Deputy Head of the Graduate School for Research Degrees (Dr Mark Bodman-Smith) and the Deputy Head of Graduate School for Taught Postgraduate Courses (Dr Kate Everett-Korn).
Research degrees
We provide a thriving research environment for our MPhil/PhD and MDRes students, supporting training through provision of our Skills Programme, which focuses on the development of transferable skills, and encouraging participation in Summer Schools.

Taught postgraduate degrees
Our postgraduate taught degrees equip scientists, clinicians, and other professionals for their future careers. We have developed a specialist portfolio of medical, healthcare, humanities, and science programmes to address current and future health challenges. We are constantly developing and enhancing our postgraduate portfolio of taught courses and we have recently launched a new MSc degree in Translational Medicine.
