The Personal Protective Equipment,PPE campaign by SUMMIT from March 2020 to July 2020 in East Malaysia. The campaign started due to the acute shortage of PPE at Lawas Hospital, Sarawak during the COVID-19 pandemic. SUMMIT was made aware at the beginning of the Movement Control Order ,MCO that the frontlines in Lawas Hospital and the community clinics in Lawas needed more PPE to prepare them to see potential COVID-19 patients. We reached out to Miri Hospital (Sarawak), Tenom and Keningau Hospital in Sabah to help supply PPE. Additionally, the community in Lawas were provided with disposable face masks.

SUMMIT reached out to corporations and organisations around Malaysia for sponsorships through social media and networking. We have managed to get the support from

  • Tanoti Handicrafts Kuching
  • Sinoxxa Sdn Bhd
  • Adopt A Healthcare worker Malaysia
  • SewforMiri
  • Permatang Pauh Women’s Project

Tanoti Handicarfts sew and donated boot covers and hood to Lawas Hospital. Also, Permatang Pauh donated the gloves. The rest of the PPE were sponsored by Sinoxxa and sewn by SewforMiri. Adopt AHelathcare Worker Malaysia is an organisation that we worked closely for sponsorship.

The PPE campaign have provided these hospitals in Sarawak and Sabah with

  • 8700 isolation gowns
  • 500 boot covers
  • 500 hoods
  • 15000 disposable face masks
  • 500 disposable gloves

QuantuMDx Meeting in Malaysia, February 2019

SUMMIT has been working collaboratively on the point of care diagnostics for global medicine with a particular focus on infectious disease and cancer.  The first initiative catalysed by this programme has been to link development of an affordable novel point of care for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) detection for industrial development and clinical implementation in Malaysia. The developers of this device are a UK based rapidly growing and highly innovative company called QuantaMDx with whom St George’s University of London have had longstanding partnership to develop diagnostics for ‘Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs).

The fruition of this collaboration is an opportunity  to partner also with Malaysian led initiatives on e-health and patient self sampling through the world class ‘Pogram ROSE’ (patient self-sampling HPV screening for cervical cancer). These development could not have been accelerated  without the excellent meeting held between QuantaMDx and the Deputy Minister of International Trade Industry (MIDA), the Director of Health Malaysia , the British High Commission in Malaysia and our academic partners at University of Malaya took place in February 2019. Currently there are 2 simultaneous consolidation initiatives:

  • Investments opportunities for manufacturing in Malaysia
  • Development of validation studies for these diagnostic initiatives in Malaysian patient cohorts
