In accordance with all relevant legislation, St George’s, University of London may routinely monitor use of its systems, including communications data entering, leaving and within its network.
The purposes for which communications data may be monitored include:

the detection of crime

the detection of unauthorised use of university systems

ensuring regulatory compliance

maintaining the security and integrity of the university's IT infrastructure.
Procedures for this type of monitoring are regulated by the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA) and preclude any unlawful interception or accessing of communications.
The legislation allows for the monitoring of university systems and network traffic for legitimate purposes without consent. However, St George’s is obliged to advise users of St George’s systems and network that such activity may take place.
All monitoring of communications data is undertaken by authorised St George’s staff only.
