Visiting us

The archives are located at St George’s, University of London, Cranmer Terrace, Tooting, London, SW17 0RE.

We are currently open to visitors by appointment only. Please get in touch with us to arrange your visit.

Note that you will be required to wear a face covering during your visit. We will do our very best to make your visit as safe as possible.

All researchers are required to produce proof of identity and will need to complete a reader registration form on their first visit to the archive. Researchers are expected to abide by the Archives and Special Collections handling guidelines (PDF).

In line with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the environmental regulations, the records held in the university archives are open to the public, unless specific exemptions apply. Records containing personal data may be exempt from disclosure under the provisions of the Data Protection Act (2018). Some archival items may be unfit for access for preservation reasons.

Please note that the majority of records relating to hospitals in, or affiliated to, the St George’s Hospital Group are held at the London Metropolitan Archives in Clerkenwell. Related collections are also held at the Royal College of Surgeons.

Ordering copies

We can provide copies of certain materials in the Archives and Special Collections in accordance with copyright regulations. Please note that some material is unsuitable for scanning for preservation reasons. Materials will be individually assessed by the archivist prior to scanning.

If you request copies remotely, we will send you a quote for the total cost, and a copyright declaration form to complete and return before we produce copies. The archivist will then organise a suitable time with you to process your payment via credit or debit card over the telephone. Upon receipt of payment, we will send you the copies via email or post. Note that payments can also be accepted via cheque.

Readers can take their own digital photographs in the archive reading area on completion of the self-service photography form.

We can also arrange for our in-house digital services team to professionally photograph items from the Archives and Special Collections. This is particularly applicable for items required for publication or which are too large or detailed for regular scanning. Please contact the archivist for details of costs.

Policies

To help us make decisions about the most appropriate use of our collections, we have a set of policies that guide our collecting activities and outline best practice.
