St George's and City have merged. Find out more.

In this project we explored experiences of diseases that are often thought of as historical in our society, such as tuberculosis and cholera, but that continue to affect millions of people around the world today.

In the Museum the destructive physical effects of tuberculosis can be seen in the lungs, bones and other organs of the body; and in the Archives the hundreds of historical post-mortem records testify to its devastating effect.

On this page, you can learn more about tuberculosis, how it has been recorded in our historical records and how some of our participants were inspired to carry out their own research to learn more about this infectious disease.
