Welcome to Library Services at St. George's

Please find below a quick overview of our services for new or returning users and visitors.  We don't expect new students or staff users to know how it all works so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask a member of library staff and we will be happy to help.

During the welcome weeks at the beginning of the postgraduate and undergraduate terms, members of the team will be on hand to welcome new students. Please come and say hello!

Joining and Accessing the Library

You will find the Library on 1st Floor Hunter Wing at the Tooting campus.   

All students should be automatically enrolled. Use your student ID card for access and to borrow books.

If you are a member of NHS, academic or administrative staff , you can join the library using our online registration forms. Access will be via your staff ID badge or an allocated Library Access Card.

Visitors, please contact the Library Helpdesk for access details or visit our visitors page.

Library and Computer Room Opening Hours

During term time the library and computer rooms are open 24/7* with library staff available from 8am to 6pm, Monday-Friday at the Library Helpdesk. At all other times, the library is staffed by our security team.  Check our Opening Hours page for any seasonal changes.

Free printing, scanning and copying are available for students from the library PCs and laptops.Charges are in place for all other users. Contact the Library Helpdesk for details.

All visitors and external members, including those on the SCONUL Access scheme and the University of London Libraries Access Agreement, can access the library. For more information about the scheme and the current participating institutions, please go to the SCONUL website.

We are now part of City St George's.

St George's University staff and students can register to use the City libraries at the Clerkenwell and Moorgate campuses. Further information can be found on this libguide.

Remote access to Library resources - students and staff

  • Online access to  electronic books and articles is always available to registered St George’s, University of London students and staff via Hunter, the library catalogue. Sign-in with your login details for access.

    You only need the first part of your username, which is your m number e.g. m1234567 for Library resources.

    Should you have any issues with your password, you can reset your password here.If you have any problems with this, please email ITAV@sgul.ac.uk.  

  • This short video demonstrates  how to access resources remotely
  • Access to healthcare databases for literature searching is available via our databases A-Z list. Choose the relevant links for ‘off-site’ access and enter your login details for access.

  • Links to resources are provided on your module My reading list on Canvas, where available, to give you easier access to key readings.

  •  If you require an electronic version of a print book, please use our Suggest a Book form and we will seek access, where possible, dependent on availability and budgets. If a book or chapter you require is listed on a resource or reading list in Canvas, please ask your tutor to contact the library to request an electronic version.

Remote access to Library resources - NHS staff

  •  The NHS Knowledge and Library Hub, a one-stop-shop for all NHS journals and other resources, is a good starting point when looking for evidence based information. Log in with your NHS OpenAthens account for the best experience.

  • You can  sign up for a Library account here. When you set up an account, you will be able to ask for an NHS OpenAthens account, for access to journals, databases and ebooks to be created on your behalf and can sign-up to our NHS Library Newsletter for updates.  You account will allow you to research and renew books but will not give you off-site access to the journal content available via Hunter which are only accessible to university staff and students remotely.

  •  To self-register for NHS OpenAthens for remote access to e-resources, visit http://openathens.nice.org.uk.Please email liaison@sgul.ac.uk if you need help with your NHS OpenAthens account.

  • Access to healthcare databases for literature searching is available via our databases A-Z list.. Choose the relevant links for  NHS staff access  and enter your NHS OpenAthens login for access.

  • Access ejournals via the NHS Journals list, when prompted enter your NHS OpenAthens login to access the full text of content accessible to you.

  • E-book access, via NHS OpenAthens, is also available via Hunter, the library catalogue. Some ebook titles are also available via the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub.

  • We provide  Librarian-led literature-searching services for all NHS and academic staff at St George's.  Send us your search requests via the CARES online form or email liaison@sgul.ac.uk

  • NHS staff can  request articles available from the St George's, University of London collections to be delivered by email. Search for articles using Hunter, the library search tool, and submit your requests using the online form.

Loans and interlibrary loans

You can borrow up-to 15 books on our self-service machines which should  auto-renew until your membership ends or an item is requested be another member.

Library support and training sessions - what you can expect from us 

  • The library module and induction on Canvas  for students is a great place to get started and don’t forget about our Libguides- there are guides for NHS and University audiences. You will also find online videos and tutorials on our  Youtube channel.
  • Embedded training sessions, organised by tutors are being delivered via a mix of face to face or  online, in line with the University's blended learning approach.

  • 1-2-1 appointments are available; they will be delivered either face to face or remotely via MS Teams. Email liaison@sgul.ac.uk to arrange an appointment. Our 'on-call' librarian service for in-person on the spot help is also available from  10am and 2pm, Monday to Friday, during term time.

  • Our bookable information skills workshops are available online or in person for all library users.

Support for researchers

Support for researchers who have question about open access, research data management and CRIS and SORA is available as usual by contacting us on our service emails of openaccess@sgul.ac.uk, researchdata@sgul.ac.uk and sora@sgul.ac.uk . 1-2-1s are also offered on Microsoft Teams or in-person.

Access to other libraries

Senate House Library  has launched a temporary remote registration service for e-resource access:

https://senatehouselibrary.libguides.com/remote-registration

This will enable users from all Federal Member Institutions, including St George's, (unless requested otherwise) to register for e-resource access on a 4 monthly rolling membership without the need for staff intervention. It does require validation through your St George's, University of London email address.
