What happens to @sgul.ac.uk email accounts after 3 March

View all Close all
What is changing
  • New external email address: From 3rd March the sending (reply-to) email address for all staff and students will change to automatically.
  • Emails sent externally will now appear to the recipient to come from your username@citystgeorges.ac.uk email address.
  • Having an external uniform email address for all staff and students will help us raise the profile of our new name and brand and ensure consistent communication externally.
What is not changing
  • Legacy email address and how to access systems: Your current email address (username@sgul.ac.uk) will remain active for receiving emails and logging in to all systems.
  • Access to old emails: You will still have access to your old mailbox and all emails contained within it including emails sent to your legacy address.
  • System logins: You will continue to use your legacy email address (username@sgul.ac.uk) or associated User ID to access all university systems. For example:
    • Microsoft systems (e.g., Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint)
    • Staff Wi-Fi on campus and Eduroam
    • Other internal platforms requiring login.
  • Internal email addresses:  emails sent internally within the Tooting campus will continue to be sent from your legacy email address (username@sgul.ac.uk).
  • Emails you receive from colleagues or students at Clerkenwell/Moorgate will appear to come from the new @citystgeorges.ac.uk email address.  This is because we are still operating using two separate IT systems.

Students will also continue to use their legacy email addresses (username@sgul.ac.uk) and associated User ID to access all systems, including Canvas.

This will remain in place until our IT systems are fully integrated, which will happen over a longer period of time.

Why the change?

This update is a crucial first step toward the full integration of our IT systems under the new university name. Having consistent email addresses across all staff and students will help align our communications and raise awareness of our rebrand outside the university.

Why now?

Enabling the new @citystgeorges.ac.uk email address on 3 March aligns with the change of our website URL to www.citystgeorges.ac.uk,  updates to signage across our campuses and the launch of our rebrand campaign for all stakeholders, including prospective students.

What you need to do

The new email address will be added automatically for all staff and students on Monday 3 March.

Please update your email signature to reflect your new email address after 3 March.

If you are sending emails to the Clerkenwell and Moorgate campuses, these need to be treated as external emails, as the two legacy email systems are not yet fully joined up. Therefore, you should follow the guidance on sending secure emails.

Notify external stakeholders of the new external @citystgeorges.ac.uk email addresses.
Further information about the rebrand activity is on the Integrations SharePoint site
