International Women's Day: In conversation with Dr Cecilia Akrisie Anim CBE

To celebrate International Women’s Day this year, we are delighted to welcome Dr Cecilia Akrisie Anim CBE to St George’s.

Dr Anim will join us to share her journey through nursing and caring from a town Ghana to becoming the President of the Royal College of Nursing, the first Black African in this role in 99 years.

Dr Anim will be in conversation with Liz Grand, Diversity and Inclusion Adviser. There will then be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.

Dr Anim trained as a midwife in Ghana before moving to the UK and qualifying as a nurse in Hull in 1977. She was President of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) during 2015 – 2018. She has been active within the RCN for more than 40 years both as a steward & Health and safety representative.

Throughout her career she has worked tirelessly supporting members in three central London NHS trusts as a staff-side Rep working in partnership with other unions. Dr Anim works as a clinical nurse specialist in sexual and reproductive health at the Margaret Pyke Centre in London and specialises in family planning and aspects of women's health with special interest in the menopause.

She received the RCN Certificate of Merit for outstanding service to members 2000, the Bevan award for Health and Wellbeing 2013, the United Nations Award for Women of Excellence in 2015, and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Health in 2016 by the University of Bradford.

In 2017, in Her Majesty's New Year’s Honours List, she was awarded The CBE in recognition of her role as a nurse, contributions to women’s health and her local community and was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Nottingham.

In 2018 she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Portsmouth and the Chairs Award for the Windrush generation.

In 2019, she received a lifetime achievement award in 2019 from the British Journal of Nursing.
