Working together
Neurosciences research is a core specialism at St George’s. Working closely with our colleagues in the Neurology department at St George’s NHS Foundation Hospital Trust, our co-location on the hospital site in Tooting is vital in enabling cutting edge fundamental and translational research into neurological conditions from movement control disorders and dementia to spinal cord injury and repair.
St George’s Hospital is the regional tertiary centre for specialist inpatient and outpatient neurosciences services for a population of 3 million people across South-West London, Surrey and Sussex. Patients visiting the Atkinson Morley Regional Neurosciences Centre benefit not only from first class care, but from a research-centred approach to diagnosing and treating patients.
Our research
Research into neurological conditions stretches across all three of our research institutes, benefitting from collaboration across disciplines. Our Neurosciences Research Centre is internationally recognised for its research into deep brain stimulation and magnetic resonance imaging. Our Cell Biology and Genetics Centres study disorders of the central nervous system and the molecular biology of nerve cells.
Working closely together, our clinicians and scientists collaborate through our Neurosciences Clinical Academic Group (CAG). Bringing together fundamental scientists, neurologists, neurophysiotherapists, neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists, this CAG is undertaking cutting-edge research which directly aims to improve treatment and management of patients.
