1997

What course did you study?

Medicine

What is your current role?

I am a GP at Molonglo Valley Medical Centre in  Canberra ACT Australia. During my time here, my role has involved developing services such as women’s health clinics.

How did you get into your current role?

I completed my GP training in UK, then moved to Australia in 2012 and continued as a GP.

Can you describe a typical day?

A typical day can involve seeing patients about a range of issues. I am also involved in Chronic and Acute Disease Management, Women's health family planning and child health immunisations, to mention just a few things- as well as offering mental health support and providing continuity of care.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I enjoy the fact that I am tackling ever-changing challenges in my role while also developing specialist skills in women's health family planning and child health.

What do you find challenging in your current role?

One challenge is dealing with social problems that impact health.

What advice would you give to a current student at St George’s who is keen to get into a similar area of work as you?

Go for it! It is worthwhile and it's a career that equips you with the skills to deal with many of the challenges faced in population health. You can also pursue a career in a number of different countries, including developing countries.

Which aspects of your degree are relevant for your current role?

I think that all of my degree has been useful in my current role and in helping me feel prepared for my career as a GP.

Do you have any advice or a message for current students at St George’s?

My Medical House Officer said, “The world is your oyster” - and it is so true about the training you receive, how much you learn and how you continue to develop.

Do you have any advice or a message for students considering studying at St George’s?

St Georges is the best place in the world to study.
