At St George’s, we have a thriving Student Ambassador scheme which is home to around 200 active students. Our Student Ambassadors engage in a wide array of work from student recruitment events such as Open Days, widening participation activities such as Science Stars and marketing opportunities such as Unibuddy Reps. Our Student Ambassadors also support singular or infrequent events such as Spotlight on Science, MMIs and research events.
What is a Student Ambassador?
A Student Ambassador is a current St George’s student who represents the University in a positive manner. Being current students, our Student Ambassadors know what it is like to attend an interview at St George’s or navigate the building for the first time. Their lived experience is so valuable when talking to potential or current students, parents or carers, staff and external guests. Student Ambassadors come to the role with variety of different skills and experiences. You may have seen one of our Student Ambassadors in the light blue tshirts across campus!
Student Ambassadors are paid : the London Living Wage (£13.85 per hour) for standard work and (£14.66 per hour) for a ‘delivery rate’; such as delivering a presentation or clinical skills session.
The activities Student Ambassadors can support with are varied depending on the department. Examples of activities and duties can include:
- Promoting Higher Education to prospective students through a variety of hands-on activities and interactions
- Acting as a role model and ambassador for Higher Education and St George’s, providing a student perspective on Higher Education to young people, potential applicants and their families
- Assisting at events, such as open days, graduation and study fairs
- Creating student-generated content such as blogs, videos and testimonials
- Answering online messages from prospective students on the Unibuddy platform
- Providing administrative support to departments within the university
As a Student Ambassador, you do not need to be involved in all the above activities, and you can apply for activities based on your preference. Training and briefing sessions are provided.

For Student:
Each academic year, we recruit Student Ambassadors from all Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes across all years. The application process is incredibly competitive, but we encourage you to apply if this is a role which interests you.
It is worth noting that students should not rely on the Student Ambassador role as a regular source of income as the work is irregular and there is plenty of competition.

The process for signing up for a shift is as follows:
- Sign up for a shift (by student ambassador)
- Assignment (by staff)
- Confirmation (sent to student ambassador)
Please note that signing up does not automatically guarantee selection for the position. Due to high demand, we often receive more applications than there are available spots for each event. As a result, not all applicants will be selected for every event they sign up for.
We generally operate on a first-come, first-served basis, but sometimes specific skills are required for certain roles. Additionally, if a student has signed up for too many shifts, we may consider offering the opportunity to other candidates to ensure fairness.
We will make every effort to notify you promptly if you are selected for a shift. Notifications are generally sent one week prior to the event.
Payments are processed on a monthly basis, meaning that work completed in a given month will be paid at the end of the following month.
There may be delays in payment for a couple of reasons:
- Right to Work Check: If your Right to Work check has not been completed, payment may be delayed. Once this check is completed and you’ve worked at least one shift in a year, you won’t need to go through it again, which will help things go more smoothly in the future.
- Missing Payment Details: If the event organizer has not yet sent the payment details, it may delay the process. Sometimes it takes longer for organizers to collect and process this information. If you haven’t received your payment within two months, please reach out to ambassadors@sgul.ac.uk for assistance.
After your right to work has been done, you can log onto my workplace to check your payslip.
We are currently working with the Clerkenwell campus to finalize the uniform details. We expect the uniforms to be available in February.
Once available, we will be implementing a lending model, where uniforms will be distributed and returned after use. More information will be provided at that time.
The GDPR training will be scheduled once all new student ambassadors have been successfully added to the payroll system.
