St George's and City have merged. Find out more.

Extenuating circumstances is the new term for mitigating circumstances. This process allows students to tell the university of their situation in a confidential manner, and the university can then help to ensure the student is supported appropriately.

What are Extenuating Circumstances?

From Monday 2 September 2024, all undergraduate, postgraduate taught students and those studying credit-bearing short courses should submit Extenuating Circumstances through the new Extenuating Circumstances portal. You must be logged in with your St George's account to use the portal.

Extenuating circumstances are circumstances that are unforeseen and are out of your control, which may negatively affect your performance in an assessment, for example, a recent bereavement of a relative, or an illness or injury affecting yourself.

Full information, including a list of accepted circumstances, how to apply, and examples of supporting documents can be found in the Extenuating Circumstances guidance (PDF).  We recommend you read through the guidance document before submitting a request.

You can check the status of your Extenuating Circumstance request through the  MyEC page
