Exam invigilators are an essential part of the exams process ensuring exams run smootlhy, within the right timeframe, and supervise the students during the exam itself.

A good invigilator requires the following characteristics:

  • Professional – representing St George’s and the face of the Exams Office.
  • Reliable – singing up for sessions, not dropping out of allocated session and arriving on time.
  • Flexible, pro-active with a ‘can do’ attitude to - carry out all duties asked by the Exams Office staff, being responsive and proactive for additional tasks during the exam.
  • Vigilant & fair – help provide a distraction free environment for students, monitor according to SGUL regulations.
  • Confident - students look to you for guidance/assistance and need to be dealt with in an efficient resolution.
  • Effective oral communication skills – able to speak interact with students and read out exam briefings at the start and end of the exam.
  • Competent and confident computer user – St George’s exams are all take online so confidence around computers is essential.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail – checking student identification, confirming attendance is a vital element which must be completed correctly.
  • Confidence in challenging behaviour – invigilators will need to confront student who are not acting in accordance with our code of conduct.

Duties will include the following:

  • Preparation of exam room - setting up tables/computers and chairs, and ensuring all required materials are available.
  • Verification of student identity - checking student IDs.
  • Distribution and collection of exam papers - handing out and collecting exam papers at the beginning and end of the examination.
  • Monitoring - circulating the room during the exam to prevent cheating and address any questions or issues that students may have.
  • Timekeeping - announcing the start and end of the exam, as well as any time warnings during the exam.
  • Handling misconduct - taking appropriate action if cheating or any other form of misconduct is observed.

Please email invigilators@sgul.ac.uk to express your interest in being an invigilator at St George’s. You will then be asked to complete an application for detailing your experience, skill set and why you would be a good invigilator. Successful applications will be invited to attend a training session on Invigilation. This training session is part of the recruitment process and must be completed before you start your role as an Invigilator.
