Many congratulations to alumnus Darren Brown on being made an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List for services to the NHS, people living with HIV, and people with Long COVID.
On his feelings on receiving the award Darren says, “I am absolutely elated, filled with immense happiness, excitement, and pride. Receiving British Orders of Chivalry is a profound honour that celebrates dedication, perseverance and excellence. I am truly humbled to be acknowledged in this way, for my work in disability and rehabilitation across HIV and Long COVID.”
“I am also immensely proud to join the ranks of those who have made life better for other people, are outstanding at what they do, and make significant contributions to our society.”
Reflecting on how studying at St George’s impacted his career path, Darren adds, “Following my time at St George’s my academic contributions and outputs increased significantly. I look back on this time fondly as I know that the knowledge and skills gained have transcended my career.”
Darren completed a postgraduate degree in Clinical Research at St George’s in 2018, and has enjoyed a varied professional career which has encompassed being made a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, receiving a World Physiotherapy international practice award and the Elisse Zack award.
“My professional career has been diverse and filled with learning. I am a Physiotherapist and have applied my passions for disability inclusion and access to safe and effective rehabilitation across the continuum of HIV care. I also applied these same skills to Long COVID.
“My career has spanned clinical, academic, and advocacy spheres – it has been unconventional but exciting. Through international networking, collaboration and peer support, I’ve been able raise my voice and elevate the voices of others. Having recently changed employment sectors, I am excited to translate these knowledge and skills to a new area.”
Many congratulations Darren.
