Michael Papadakis and Giuseppe Rosano elected as new presidents of heart research associations

Dr Michael Papadakis and Professor Giuseppe Rosano have been named as president-elect for two separate prestigious heart research associations. Dr Papadakis has been voted to lead the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC), while Professor Rosano will be responsible for the European Heart Failure Association (HFA). Both have been appointed to serve their terms from 2022-2024.

The two associations each play a significant role in cardiology research, and both fall under the umbrella of the European Society of Cardiology, which is a world leading organisation in the discovery and dissemination of best practices in cardiovascular medicine.

With both appointments being awarded to members of the St George’s community, it presents an even greater opportunity to demonstrate and promote the University’s excellence in cardiovascular research.

Dr Papadakis is a Reader at St George’s, University of London and runs the Sports Cardiology Master’s programme at the University, which is the first qualification of its kind internationally. Speaking about his appointment, he said: “It’s a huge honour and responsibility to be elected as president. It will increase my workload significantly, but I believe deeply in preventive and sports cardiology and want to maximise the opportunities for the association and for St George’s.

“It’s so important to bring prevention to the forefront of the society, and I hope that’s something I will be able to achieve in my role.”

Giuseppe Rosano, Professor of Cardiology at St George’s, University of London and co-Director of the Master’s degree in Heart Failure due to start in September 2021, added: “It is a great privilege to be elected as president of the largest Heart Failure Association worldwide. It would not have been possible without the help and support of the whole cardiovascular team at St George’s. 

“I am sure that, working together, Michael and I will find synergisms between our respective Associations and we shall be able to further expand the opportunities for St George’s. The Heart Failure team at St George’s is world class and with their support, I am sure, we can make a meaningful change in the care of the millions of heart failure patients worldwide.”
