Inaugural lecture: Professor Asma Khalil, ‘The fetus at risk’.

In her inaugural lecture, Professor Asma Khalil will explore how we identify at-risk babies, regardless of their size, so that we can prevent them from coming to harm during pregnancy.

Asma did her MD at the University of London (2009), her subspecialty training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at University College London Hospital (UCLH), and gained a Masters in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (MRC scholarship). She was appointed as consultant at St George’s Hospital in 2012.

Her research interests include hypertensive disease in pregnancy, fetal growth restriction and multiple pregnancy. She has published more than 150 peer reviewed papers and developed the Home Monitoring of Hypertension in Pregnancy (HAMPTON) system, which enables expectant mothers to monitor high blood pressure at home with an app. This has won national awards, including the 2017 HSJ Innovation award. Asma has been subsequently selected to be an NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) Fellow.

Asma is an advocate of women’s right to education and equality. She was awarded a NICE (National Institute of Health and Care Excellence) Fellowship (2013-2016) and was a member of the NICE Quality Standards Committee. She holds many committee and advisory roles including Expert Adviser for the NICE Centre for Guidelines, and is an International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) Ambassador.

She has maintained a clinical role throughout her career, looking after women with challenging pregnancies.
