Professor Iain Greenwood has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the British Pharmacological Society.

Previous recipients of the Honorary Fellowship include Nobel Laureates, international prize-winners, long-standing members of the British Pharmacological Society (BPS), and those who have advanced the fields of Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics through their research, leadership and contributions to the BPS.

Honorary Fellows are elected for life, with Iain being recognised for his sustained excellence in research and teaching of pharmacology.

Iain is Professor of Vascular Pharmacology at St George’s, University of London and co-Director for the BSc in Clinical Pharmacology.

We spoke to Iain about receiving this honour and his proudest moments.

Honoured and grateful

Reflecting on receiving the news of his fellowship, Iain said he felt: “shock and then joy. Like many I have imposter syndrome – ‘just doing my job’.

"So, to get recognition of sustained research and educational activity by a learned society made me feel really pleased, proud even."

The most pleasing bit is being recognised for ‘sustained’ activity not just a flash in the pan. I'm honoured and grateful that someone nominated me.

The lightbulb moment

Sharing some of his proudest achievements, Iain said:

“I'm going to be cheesy and say helping PhD students flourish and when undergraduates 'get it'. The light bulb moment."

I'm proud that my PhD students have gone on to run their own groups or become effective clinicians.

"I'm proud that my research has been supported entirely by my efforts - no free rides. I'm proud that I'm still approachable.”

Plans for the future

When asked whether the accolade will change his plans for the future, Iain said:

“I don’t think there’ll be a big change. I'll still teach Biomedical Science and Clinical Pharmacology with the same supply of puns and analogies."

I'll still muddle through supervising my four PhD students. I'll still whistle a lot.

Congratulations Iain for this well-deserved accolade!
