Deputy-Principal (Institutional Affairs) at St George’s Professor Deborah Bowman and Medicine student Leanne Armitage have been nominated for Women of the Future 2019 Awards.
The Women of the Future awards were founded by Pinky Lilani CBE DL in 2006 and were created to provide a platform for emerging female talent and the people supporting them.
Final year medic, Leanne Armitage, has been nominated in the science category of the Awards. This category recognises truly remarkable female scientists, who are forging new ground in research and scientific achievement.
Leanne has been nominated for her work as founder and CEO of The Armitage Foundation. Leanne has set up a medical outreach programme, named aptly ‘Leanne’s Amazing Medics’, which aims to inspire, equip and increase the self-confidence of students who want to study medicine and who come from backgrounds currently under-represented in the profession.
“It feels great to be nominated for this award,” said Leanne. “What I love most is that as well as recognising women for the great work they do, it places a focus on encouraging women to work together for better.
“It’s very encouraging to know that an ethos of women who support and empower other women is being promoted because it is easier to make a difference when we work together.”
Deputy Principal (Institutional Affairs) and Professor of Medical Ethics at St George’s, Deborah Bowman, has been nominated in the category of Mentor of the Year. This award, recognises active mentors behind the success of younger women and pays tribute to some of the most influential and unsung heroes and heroines in British life. Professor Bowman has been nominated for her work mentoring members of staff and students across the institution and beyond.
“I have been fortunate to have several brilliant mentors who have supported me through my career in ways that were transformative. I have no doubt about the difference mentoring can make. I am touched and amazed by this nomination,” said Professor Bowman, commenting on her nomination.
“I consider myself lucky to be able to act as a mentor for people from a range of disciplines and at different stages of their own careers. Every conversation is enriching and I always feel energised and that I’ve learned a lot too. I’d recommend it to anyone!”
Professor Jenny Higham, Principal of St George’s, added, “It is a huge achievement for St George’s that both a staff member and a student have been nominated for such a prestigious award. I’m extremely proud of both Deborah and Leanne and the contributions that they have made not only to St George’s, but also to the wider community. All of us at St George’s will be cheering them on at the awards ceremony.”
The annual Women of the Future Awards will be held on Thursday November 7 at the London Hilton on Park Lane.
