St George’s, University of London has received an institutional Athena Swan Silver award, acknowledging the continued work in promoting equity and diversity in the University community.
In doing so, St George’s joins a small number of universities to retain their award status under Advance HE’s new Athena Swan Charter. This further demonstrates the University’s commitment to, and success in, promoting gender equality across its work and activities.
St George’s was first awarded the Athena Swan Silver award in 2018 and the fresh award status highlights a more intersectional approach to work in equality, diversity and inclusion. The proportion of female professors at St George’s has continued to rise, up from 18% to 40% over the last decade. Representation of those from global majority backgrounds among academics, research, professional and technical staff has also increased to 32%.
“I’m immensely proud [of the fresh institutional Silver award]. Thanks to the collective efforts of all who contributed to this success! We have an ambitious plan that aims to address gender equality holistically, for instance in relation to different career paths and racial equality. I hope the new Silver award encourages us to keep going and continue to integrate our Athena Swan actions with other strategic commitments.”
- Dean of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at St George’s, Dr Vanessa Ho -
“I am thrilled that St George’s has been recognised once again for our continued endeavours in promoting equity and inclusion. The retention of this award exemplifies the critical importance that the institution places on these issues, and demonstrates that we remain an environment where women feel welcome in our community and valued for their contribution.”
- Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jenny Higham -
“This award is well-deserved recognition of the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. Meeting the standards to receive a fresh Silver award is not an easy task nowadays and that we have done so is a shining testament to our commitment to excellence in this area.”
- Chief Operating Officer (Interim), Dr Anna Dulic-Sills -
