“The need for a diverse medical workforce is imperative"

Recent graduate, Leanne Armitage, has been named as one of the UK’s top ten rising stars by Rare Rising Stars, an annual awards ceremony celebrating the UK’s top ten black African and Caribbean university students.

Leanne studied Medicine at St George’s, University of London and has received the award in recognition of her charity the Armitage Foundation which was registered in 2018. The foundation is committed to increasing the representation of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnic minorities in the medical profession.

On being recognised by Rare Rising Stars, Leanne says, “Being acknowledged as one of the top ten black African and Caribbean university students in the UK is an absolute honour! I always feel a deep sense of gratitude when I'm recognised for the work I have done through the charity.

“There were many moments when I questioned whether I was doing the right thing, trying to balance studying medicine with running a charity and attending events/speaking engagements. Despite the challenge, I do believe it was the right thing to do.

“The need for a diverse medical workforce is imperative – doctors must reflect the diverse society they serve in order to deliver the best care for patients!

“To be recognised as a Rare Rising Star in light of this, feels like a great achievement and is a source of motivation for me to keep driving forwards towards the vision I have for our future NHS.”
