Dr Daniel Burrage

Honorary Senior Lecturer in BSc Clinical Pharmacology

Dr Daniel Burrage (PhD, FRCP) is a consultant physician in clinical pharmacology and acute medicine at St George’s Hospital and an honorary senior lecturer for the BSc in Clinical Pharmacology at St George’s, University of London.

Dr Daniel Burrage first joined St George's, University of London in 2011 as an academic clinical fellow, became an honorary Senior Lecturer in 2017, and completed his training in Clinical Pharmacology, General Medicine and Stroke Medicine in 2020. He returned as a Consultant in Clinical Pharmacology and Acute Medicine and honorary Senior Lecturer in 2023.

Daniel graduated in Medicine from University College London in 2009. He was awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology in 2011. During this time, he completed a MSc in Medical Education, focusing on how prescribing skills are learnt in medical training. After being awarded an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship, he completed a PhD on 'the relationship between exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and systemic vasculature' (2019). He was awarded the Harold Lambert prize for best PhD for this work.

Following his completion of clinical training in Clinical Pharmacology, General Medicine and Stroke Medicine, Daniel worked clinically in Acute Medicine at the Whittington Hospital and was the lead for medical undergraduate Clinical Pharmacology teaching at UCL. Having returned to St George’s in 2023, Daniel continues to work across Acute Medicine as well as in Clinical Pharmacology, contributing to the development of the polypharmacy service.

His external work has included membership of the MRCP specialty question-writing group, early career member of the Regional Medicines Optimisation Committee and deputy chair for education on the British Pharmacological Society trainee committee. He is currently a member of the British National Formulary Joint Formulary Committee and is helping to lead a NICE diagnostics assessment on clopidogrel genotype testing after ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack.

Daniel’s personal research interests span qualitative research on prescribing education (MSc) to the study of multimorbidity in the context of COPD (PhD).

As part of a secondment to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) during his clinical training Daniel worked as project physician lead for the set up a phase 1/2 clinical trial investigating a novel small molecule for the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions.

In NHS settings, Daniel has contributed to the delivery of clinical trials in patients with acute stroke, respiratory infection and inflammation including COPD, and in the Covid-19 pandemic the RECOVERY trial.

Daniel was awarded a £364,000 NIHR doctor research fellowship.

As part of his PhD, Daniel collaborated on the Novel vascular manifestations of COPD (NoVasC) research programme, investigating mechanisms underlying the development of vascular disease and comorbidities in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This clinical research programme was the product of a longstanding collaboration between Professor Emma Baker, Professor Paul Jones, Emeritus Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Dr Tom Barrick, Senior Lecturer in Image Analysis at St George's and Dr James Dodd, Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine, Bristol University.

Daniel has completed a MSc in medical education and was awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Daniel has contributed to the development and delivery of MBBS teaching on clinical pharmacology, therapeutics and prescribing at St George's and UCL. Team innovations have included the best-selling textbook 'The Top 100 Drugs - Clinical Pharmacology and Practical Prescribing', now in its third edition, and the innovative 'Prescribing Scenarios at a Glance'.

His current role sees him co-lead on clinical skills and drug development modules for the BSc in Clinical Pharmacology.
