Rowan Thorpe

Lecturer in Physiotherapy with an interest in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

Rowan is a lecturer in Physiotherapy at St. George's, University of London. He started part-time at the university in 2022 before starting full-time in 2023. Alongside his lecturing role he is the BSc Year 1 lead, a course admissions tutor, and a module lead for Pathology, Health Promotion and Rehabilitation. Rowan is passionate about musculoskeletal physiotherapy and education, and considering how to support students in transferring theory into clinical practice.

Rowan graduated with BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2011. After completing his community service year, he worked at a musculoskeletal (MSK) and Sports focussed clinic, which prompted him to undertake an MPhil in Exercise and Sports Physiotherapy at UCT, which he completed in 2017 with a distinction in his dissertation looking at "The knowledge and attitudes of South African-based runners regarding the use of analgesics during training and competition". 

In 2017 Rowan moved to the UK and started working in the NHS progressing into Team Lead and Advanced Clinical Practice roles in MSK. Throughout this period Rowan maintained his passion for education and teaching, which resulted in his part-time move to St. George's, University of London in 2022 before moving into a full-time position in 2023.

Rowan has since started as the BSc Year 1 lead alongside his roles as a course admissions tutor and module lead.

Rowan is currently completing a Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare and Biomedical Education through St. George's.

Rowan is the module lead for Pathology, Health Promotion and Rehabilitation (PHPR) a BSc Year 1 Module, as well as being a team member on the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy module, and Factors Influencing Professional Practice (FIPP) module.

Rowan has also contributed to other BSc and MSc modules as well as supervising research groups.

At a post-graduate level, he has contributed to the MSK module for the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.
