We are building a positive research culture at St George's where researchers feel empowered to do their best work and develop their career.
We're putting £5.8 million of Office for Students funding towards improving facilities and equipment for our students.
Deep brain stimulation has revealed that a specific type of brain wave activity is associated with levels of anxiety in people living with Parkinson’s disease.
Your gift to St George’s will inspire our students, our research, and our community, and ultimately impact the patients who will benefit from the care and expertise of our graduates around the world.

IRF staff support the provision of a histology suite that allows the histological and immunohistological analysis of cells and tissues. The facility currently provides the following:
At the IRF, we provide comprehensive tissue and biological processing services tailored to your research needs. Our Leica TP1020 Automated Tissue Processor in the lab can efficiently handles up to 60 cassettes per run, streamlining sample preparation from fixation to readiness for embedding. For more delicate samples that require special care, we also offer meticulous hand processing to ensure that even the most fragile specimens are preserved. Whether automated or manual, our processing solutions are designed to deliver high-quality results with minimal sample loss.

Our facility offers a dedicated tissue embedding workstation equipped with the Leica Histocore Arcadia H heated embedding module and the Arcadia C cold plate. This setup provides users with the flexibility to orient their tissue samples in the optimal position, ensuring ideal block formation for downstream experiments. Samples for cryostat are hand processed to ensure optimum preservation of the tissue. The embedding station can be reserved via PPMS for DIY use, allowing researchers full control over their sample preparation. Alternatively, our experienced staff are available to perform the embedding as a service, delivering expertly prepared blocks to meet your experimental needs.

For wax sectioning, we use the Histocore Rotary Microtome, which can produce precise tissue slices as thin as 4 μm. This motorized system allows for easy sectioning at the push of a button, or it can be manually controlled for those who prefer a customized sectioning style. We offer training sessions to help you get started. Alternatively, our experienced staff can offer you perform the sectioning for you as a service.

Our facility is also equipped with Leica CM1900 + Thermo Scientific HM525NX cryostatfor sectioning frozen tissues. It is capable of producing ultra-thin 10 μm tissue slices. This precision instrument is available for DIY use, alternatively, our skilled staff can provide this service for you. If your project has special requirements or needs customised handling, please consult with our team for tailored solutions.

We provide a variety of staining options to meet your research needs, including H&E staining, Lillie’s Trichrome stain, and Picosirius Red staining. Additionally, we offer customized staining protocols tailored to specific project requirements after consultation with our team. Staining services are charged per slide.

We offer customized immunohistochemistry (IHC) services designed to support the specific needs of your research. Our process begins with a consultation to thoroughly understand your project requirements, allowing us to optimize staining protocols for accurate, targeted antibody detection. Please reach out to us via email irf@sgul.ac.uk.
Order Immunohistochemistry
Upon request technical staff can undertake work in the area of histology and immunohistochemistry on behalf of the facility users. Contact the facility for further information and pricing.
Facility users have the option to access our laboratories and perform techniques independently using our resources at a lower cost compared to services provided by our staff. For further information and detailed pricing, please contact the facility.
Our fully equipped laboratory is available for histology and immunohistochemistry staining, with access to reagents and equipment. We also offer some primary antibodies upon request, available at an additional cost. The price includes secondary antibodies and the Haematoxylin counterstain used in immunohistochemistry.
All users will need to be trained by facility staff prior to use of the histology area. Training is free and can be arranged with facility staff upon request. Competent users (as designated by facility technicians) will require area induction and sign off only.
