St George's and City have merged. Find out more.

Preparing for university is really important, and there are a number of things that we recommend you are aware of, or have completed before you join us.

You can find these below. Please get in touch if you need any clarification.

  • I’m clear on how I’m paying my tuition fees: through the Student Loans Company, the NHS Grants Unit or my own money.
  • I’m clear on how I’m paying my accommodation fees: through a maintenance loan or my own money.
  • I have a clear budget for the first year: to ensure you can cover your living costs.
  • I have my own bank account
  • Internet banking means you don’t need to open an account in a branch local to St George’s — accounts can take a couple of weeks to open so it’s best to do this in advance.
  • I’ve insured my valuable belongings: basics are covered if you’re living in halls, but you will need to insure items such as your laptop and smartphone separately.

Enrolling online

Enrolment is carried out in two stages.  The first part is completed online.  The second is completed onsite, where we verify your identity and you obtain your student ID card.

You will receive an email from Admissions asking you to complete the initial stage:

  1. Complete your online enrolment task
  2. Upload copies of your qualifications.

You will be guided through the process, but you might want to prepare the following documents so you have electronic copies to hand when you request them:

  • a current form of photographic identification (e.g. passport or driver’s licence)
  • all academic certificates you have achieved to date
  • non-academic certificates you have achieved to date.

Once you’ve completed the initial stage, you’ll be invited to an onsite enrolment session during the first week of your term.

What to pack
  • If you're living away from home, either in halls or in a private let, don't forget to pack the following essentials. Please note this list is not exhaustive.
  • Your laptop and/or tablet, plus case, mouse and any other bits of kit.
  • Chargers for your electronics.
  • Power adaptors if you're an international student.
  • Towels and bedding.
  • Kitchen equipment: this will vary depending on your culinary prowess, but might include crockery (plates, bowls, mugs, cups, glasses), cutlery (knives, forks, spoons), bottle opener, chopping board, cheese grater, chopping knives, colander, corkscrew, baking tray, kitchen scissors, a couple of saucepans with lids, frying pan, casserole dish, masher, measuring jug, microwaveable bowl, tea towels, tin opener, wooden spoons.
  • Something special from home – if you're feeling homesick, having a few of your own keepsakes around you can really make a difference.
