Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) are being phased out by UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) and replaced by a digital immigration status known as the eVisa. If you have a BRP that expires on 31 December 2024, you’ll soon transition from physical documents to the eVisa system.

This change means that visa holders will need to register an account with UKVI. This account will provide access to important information such as your immigration status, attached conditions and expiry dates. Once you set up an account, you will be given instructions on how you can generate a share code to prove your immigration status online for various purposes including studying, working and renting.

You must contact us as soon as you can access your eVisa as we will need to verify your immigration status online.

What do I need to do?

Regularly check your email and create a UKVI account when invited!

UKVI will be emailing all visa-holders in the coming months, asking them to sign up and create a UKVI account to get access to their eVisa. If you haven't been invited yet, you can’t create an account.

If you have already received an invitation email from the UKVI ask you to create a UKVI account, please follow the instruction in the email before you current BRP expires. If you have permission to stay in the UK, once you’ve created your UKVI account you will be able to sign in to the view and prove service to access your eVisa.

When will I be contacted by UKVI?

The University is not involved in this process, so we can’t provide a specific timeframe for when you might hear from UKVI. We have been advised that the transition from BRPs to eVisas for current holders is expected to take several months so you may not hear anything for a while. It’s a phased process, so others may receive invitations to register their accounts before you. This isn't cause for concern.

You can sign up for updates about eVisas on the GOV.UK website.

How do I know the email from the UKVI is genuine?

The email should come from the email address: donotreply.evisadirectmail@notifications.service.gov.uk and contain the following (or similar) instructions:

We are contacting you because your BRP will expire on 31 December 2024. To prove your immigration status after this date you will need to replace your BRP with an eVisa. The expiration of your BRP card does not affect your immigration status. However, starting in 2025, the way you prove your immigration status will change.

How to create a UKVI account?
If you require some instruction to create a UKVI account, UKVI published a video on How to create a UKVI account, which provides you with step-by-step instructions.

What will happen if I do not create a UKVI account?

Do I need to let St George's University know if I have obtained an eVisa?

Yes! You must contact us as soon as you can access your eVisa.
