What is happening?

St George's, University of London is exploring the exciting opportunity of joining forces with City, University of London to establish a new, multi-faculty, combined university, which we intend will be called City St George’s, University of London, subject to obtaining approval from our regulators.

This potential merger would bring together the strengths of both universities, creating the biggest educator of Londoners in the capital and a ‘health powerhouse’ for students and researchers. With St George’s’ reputation as a world-leading specialist health university and City's excellence in a range of disciplines including health, business, law, creativity, and communications, we envision a combined institution that would propel us to new heights and offer students exciting opportunities.

We hope to have a final decision about whether St George’s and City will merge soon. It is intended that the new combined university will launch in August 2024, ready for the start of the academic year 2024/25.

What does this mean for me?

2024/25 Offer Holders

There will be no other changes to the conditions of your offer or the content and structure of your chosen course starting in 2024/5. You can still expect the same excellent teaching, taught by the same subject experts, and will be based at our campus at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, which will remain as part of the combined institution following the merger. We’ll be going through the process to enable us to offer our students the choice to still graduate with a St George’s Hospital Medical School degree certificate, or choose to graduate with a degree certificate from the new university.

2025/26 Offer Holders

You can still expect excellent teaching, taught by subject experts, at a university that is committed to health education.

As you are holding a deferred offer, you should note that between now and when you enrol there may be some changes made to your chosen course and the university services and facilities described now may change (or not be available) for your deferred year of entry. You will also need to accept the terms and conditions relating to that year of entry, which may be different to the ones you have seen. Updated terms and conditions will be available to view online prior to enrolment.

Changes to our Terms and Conditions

The legal effect of the merger of St George’s, University of London and City, University of London is that all of St George’s’ business and assets (including all student contracts) will be transferring to City, which we intend will be renamed City St George’s, University of London (once we have received approval to that change from our regulators). This means we will need to transfer our student contracts to the new combined university.

The way we are doing this is by adding the following wording to our student terms and conditions, which we direct you to within your offer letter.

2.7.11 It will be a condition of the contract between a student and St George’s that the student agrees that, if St George’s merges with City, University of London, St George’s may transfer that contract to the combined university, intended to be known as City St George’s, University of London without requiring any further consent from the student.

The above wording has been added to our General Regulations for the 2024/5 academic year, which you will be asked to agree to again at enrolment. View our general regulations.
