This Emergency Trauma Care course has been designed for registered nurses working in Major Trauma Centres and Trauma Units that are directly involved in the emergency care of polytrauma patients. A range of traumatic injuries, contemporary and emerging evidence-based practice and related subject area’s will be explored the focus being the initial assessment and management of these patients in the context of the Emergency Department.

  • Registered Nurse
  • Participants who will be working in a Trauma Unit or Major Trauma Centre.
  • Evidence of the successful completion of Level 1 NMTNG Competencies.
  • Only available for participants within South West London and Surrey Trauma Network

Course description

In summary this module will enable students to:

  • Enhance clinical assessment skills in the poly trauma patient and develop their critical decision-making ability.
  • Provide registered nurses with the essential specialist knowledge to manage the poly trauma patient.
  • Provide registered nurses with the clinical skills and understanding of the associated risks and complications of these interventions and how to recognise and manage them.
  • Provide registered nurses with the ability and skills to critically evaluate and develop service provision to this group of patient

Learning outcomes

These Learning Outcomes are designed to align to the NMTNG Level 2 Emergency Department Trauma Competencies.

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary trauma network systems and an understanding of current guidance that influences the delivery of trauma care in the UK.
  2. Apply knowledge of pathophysiology and mechanism of injury in relation to life-threatening injury patterns identified during the primary and secondary survey.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the reception and initial assessment of the trauma patient and the nurse’s unique (technical and non-technical) contribution to teamwork in a trauma setting.
  4. Demonstrate efficient and comprehensive initial assessment skills of a trauma patient using the >c<ABCDE approach, incorporating a range of information to rapidly identify life-threatening conditions.
  5. Demonstrate expertise in the management of life-threatening injuries with reference to contemporary guidance and evidence-base.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the holistic and adapted assessment and management approaches for patients across the lifespan and in special circumstances who have sustained a traumatic injury.
Mode of delivery and assessment

The course will adopt a blended learning approach.  The participants will independently work through the course modules over a period of weeks.  The theoretical component of the course will be delivered on Canvas using a variety of teaching resources (reading, listening and watching) to support knowledge acquisition.  On the completion of the self-directed study students will need to pass the consolidation quiz.  On successful completion of the theoretical component the participants will be invited to attend 2 on-site days to enable them to develop and practice clinical skills and be summatively assessed through an Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE), this is a pass/fail assessment which fulfils the Level 2 NMTNG educational standard.
