The Turing scheme is a UK government initiative offering global mobility opportunities to students from UK schools, colleges and universities and offers additional support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
St George’s, University of London has secured a Turing grant for 2024/25 to support International student mobility activities that take place between September 2024 to August 2025 for placements that are from a minimumof 28 days to a maximum of 365 days.
Disadvantaged students
Students from a disadvantaged background can received extra funds for living and travel costs as outlined on this page/ There are several criteria that can be used to define disadvantaged including:
- Someone with an annual household income of £25,000 or less
- Someone in receipt of Universal credit or income related benefits
- Students with experience of being in care or a care leaver
- Students who have caring responsibilities
- Students who are estranged from their family
- Students who are refugees or asylum seekers

Daily living costs
The Turing fund provides help with daily living costs, the amount each student can receive depends on the group the destination is in. Groups are based on an assessment of the general cost of living in those destinations:
- Group 1 – Higher cost of living
- Group 2 – Lower cost of living

There are different rates depending on the length of the placement, Student who complete a placement lasting more than 57 days will receive the 57 to 365 days rate for the whole placement, including the first 28 to 56 days.

Travel funding
There are additional funds in the form of travel grants available to students from a disadvantaged background to help pay for travel costs. Funding can cover the direct costs of a return trip to a placement up to a specific limit. Rates can be found here: List of destinations and grant rates.
If you are eligible for travel funding you will be asked to provided proof of actual travel costs.
Readiness to travel
Students from a disadvantaged background may get assistance with readiness to travel, if you need help with any of the below and have no other way of paying for it then let the Study Abroad team know as soon as possible:
- Passports
- Visa applications and reasonable associated costs e.g. translated documents and police certificates
- vaccines
- travel insurance
- medical certificates.
Additional support for those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
The Turing scheme will fund up to a 100% of actual costs directly related to the additional needs.
