The Institute of Infection and Immunity offers undergraduate students the opportunity to understand major public health challenges in both the developed and developing worlds. The institute provides undergraduate teaching that is thought-provoking and mirrors the dynamics of our wide-ranging research pathways. The teaching level adjusts gradually – harnessing core skills in the first year and refining the participants’ scientific thinking as the course progresses. Assessments take the form of essays, short- and long-form questions and oral presentations.

Research projects

Towards their final year of study, students are invited to choose from a wide range of infection and immunity projects. These projects promote independent learning and endeavour, while still under close supervision and guidance. Many of these projects involve travel to low- and middle-income countries where the burden of infectious disease is most prevalent.

Supporting students

The Institute of Infection and Immunity encourages all undergraduate students to take their first dip into research. Our staff assist all interested students to shape their research questions and support them in organising, planning and presenting their analyses. The institute supports undergraduates in the following steps:

  • choosing an area from our multiple infection and immunity research fields

  • discussion of a research questions with your potential supervisor

  • designing and planning your data collection

  • analysing and reporting your research.
