Education Excellence Awards 2025

Tooting Campus, School of Health and Medical Sciences

The Education Excellence Awards are designed to recognise and celebrate the contributions made by individuals and teams at the Tooting campus over the last academic year, aiming to promote reflection and evidence-based decision-making in education. They recognise commitment to, and excellence in, the enhancement of our students’ educational experience across all dimensions of education, from teaching and course design to learner support, supervision and resources development. Awards can be made for a one-off initiative or for a sustained activity.

While Individual Awards recognise the commitment of individual colleagues, the Collaborative Awards acknowledge that achieving positive educational change and outcomes are often the result of collaborative effort. Collaborations can involve people, including students, from different areas of the university, with different roles, working together actively to improve or transform education. Teams may be formal teams based on existing organisational structures or may be informal groupings for long-term activities or short-term initiatives.

 

Eligibility for Awards: Up to 10 awards will be made in 2025 for work undertaken or completed by colleagues working on the Tooting campus of the School of Health and Medical Sciences during the last 12 months.

All Tooting staff, academic and professional services, part- or full-time, are eligible to apply, as individuals or as part of a collaborative team. Collaborative Awards may include students.

Please note: Previous award-winners are not eligible to make a new application within three years of winning the award (so anyone awarded in or after 2023 cannot reapply this year). However, previous Individual Award winners can apply as part of a team for a Collaborative Award, or members of a previous award-winning collaborative team can apply as individuals.

Awards: Individual Award winners will receive £200 and Collaborative Award winners will receive up to £1000 (depending on the size of team). Payments are made via payroll and are subject to deductions. Award money should be used for educational development and research activity.  Winners of Awards will be expected to contribute a case study on their award-winning practice that will be shared with the wider community.

Awards Criteria: Awards are made on the basis that the nominated individual or collaborative team:

  • Enables meaningful student engagement in their educational experience to inspire and motivate students and support student achievement;
  • Demonstrates a real impact on the student educational experience drawing on evidence of effectiveness and/or impact (e.g. student feedback, student or related service-performance data etc.);
  • Demonstrates inclusive practice by considering issues of equity, diversity and exclusion and acting on this to create an inclusive environment for all students in their context;
  • Demonstrates effective collaboration (For Collaborative Award Only) by using strategies for effective collegial working and outcomes. This may include examples of effective communication, valuing of different viewpoints, delegation or the sharing of responsibilities.

Award Submissions: All submissions for the Education Excellence Awards go through two stages:

Stage 1: Nominations

Nomination Form

Applications can be made on the basis of self-nomination, or a nomination or nominations from a fellow staff member, student or student group. Self-nomination or nominations for both the Individual and Collaborative Awards should be made using the form and emailed to educationawards@sgul.ac.uk by the nominations deadline as stated below.

When making a nomination, nominators should consider the award criteria above, and if possible, provide evidence for one or more of these. Nominations are sent to nominees who then decide whether to make an application for an Award.

Stage 2: Application

The Education Excellence Awards are designed to promote reflection and evidence-based decision-making in education. After the nomination deadline, nominated individuals and collaborative teams will be invited to prepare a short account of their work in relation to the awards criteria, emailed to educationawards@sgul.ac.uk by the submission deadline as stated below.

Timeline for the Education Excellence Awards 2025:

  • Stage 1 Nominations deadline: 17:00 on Monday 31 March 2025
  • Stage 2 Full submission deadline: 17:00 on Friday 2 May 2025
  • Awards Panel to convene: w/c Monday 2 June 2025

A Special Commendation for Educational Resource Development was givento the Museum of Human Diseases Canvas module team, led by Carol Shiels, Lead for Public and Civic Engagement and the Curator of the Museum of Human Diseases.
