Disrupting Coloniality in Educational Research through creative methodologies

City St George’s ESIC offers you a collaborative space to learn and unlearn multiple ways of engaging in educational research and scholarship.

Have you seriously thought about ‘why’ you know ‘what’ you know?

The next ESIC event (06th May 2025, 11:30-13:00, Room H0.1 & H0. 2) will offer you the opportunity to critically reflect on what is accepted as ‘knowledge’ in higher education.

Katie Campion (Centre for Clinical Education) will discuss how the Experience-Based Co-Design (EBCD) approach was effectively used in her SSPG project to explore the gap between the intention for inclusive education and how students actually live and feel the experience of inclusive education. She will share her experience of co-creating nuanced, transformative and actionable knowledge through the process of co-designing a film with her student partners. Katie will explain how her research approach enabled her to challenge coloniality in the process of narrating students’ lived experience.

Thushari Welikala and David Ross (CIDE) will draw on their participatory creative inquiries, focused on exploring how students make meaning of lived experiences of coloniality within learning places and spaces. They will share their experience of co-creating knowledge through creative inquiry, examining how the distinction between the knowledge created and the creators of knowledge dissolved in the research process, allowing possibilities for continuous re-authoring of knowledge.
