At this event Dr Jacqueline Driscoll, GP Trainee Academic Fellow at St George’s, will discuss her award -winning phenomenological study, focused on understanding the foundation doctors’ lived experience of learning the skill of ‘handover’. Her discussion will be followed by Q & A and group conversation on phenomenology as a research methodology.

In this presentation, Dr Driscoll will share her work on understanding student experience of learning the skill of 'handover' on their clinical attachments from a hermeneutic phenomenological perspective. Her work has been funded by a student staff partnership grant at St George’s. It focuses on addressing the low confidence reported by the foundation doctors of their handover skills.

She will discuss the rationale for using phenomenology as the methodology within the context of this study. Focus groups, the main method of data collection used in the study will also be discussed in some detail.

Dr Driscoll has received the award for early career medical education researcher at the Society of Academic Primary Care South East Meeting 2024 for this study.

About Dr Driscoll

Dr Driscoll has a background in simulation training and research. She has a Masters in Medical Humanities. She has spent the last year immersed in handover and have been researching this often-overlooked skill from a phenomenological and meta-ethnographic perspective. Drawing on these qualitative methodologies she aims to make meaning of the implicit norms and values embedded within the culture of medicine and medical education.
